Natural disasters may occur frequently in certain regions, but they are never easy to endure. Survivors often face severe hardship, both during and after the disaster, while some sadly succumb to its aftermath.

Recently, we watched as Hurricane Helena wreaked havoc, and now Hurricane Milton has struck Florida and Mexico, bringing with it devastating floods and tragic loss of lives.

A friend from Florida described her situation as unbearable. “The traffic is overwhelming,” she said when evacuating, “but staying behind feels like a death sentence.” Now that the storm has passed, the effects continue to linger. In moments like this, the victims need all the support they can get.

Though I’m not directly involved, I feel their pain deeply. The thought of having to evacuate with little preparation, to an unfamiliar place, with lives at risk, is unimaginable. Returning home to find your property in shambles is disheartening. 

Surviving such a disaster isn’t just about physical strength—it’s about the emotional toll and the willingness to lean on others. But even in the face of disaster, it’s heartwarming to hear stories of communities coming together, people donating what they can, and strangers offering a helping hand.

This kind of sacrifice and support reminds me of the caregivers I see in my practice, who provide unwavering care to loved ones struggling with illness. Like disaster survivors, the sick face their own battles—physical pain, emotional distress, and the overwhelming desire to recover.

I recall a patient in the advanced stages of cancer, clinging to the hope that one more round of chemotherapy might prolong her life. She felt unsupported by her family, especially her sister who had been with her throughout her treatments. Both were exhausted, physically and emotionally drained.

In that moment, I realized how deeply misunderstood they both were—one fighting to survive, the other silently bearing the weight of that fight.

In difficult times, whether natural disasters or illnesses, we often react from a place of stress and fear. But recognizing the sacrifices others make can bring much-needed relief and understanding.

During our conversation, my patient began to see her sister’s efforts in a new light, and her sister felt acknowledged for the sacrifices she had made. They left my office lighter, more connected, and with a renewed sense of peace.

Whether it’s facing the aftermath of a hurricane or the long journey of illness, difficult situations test our strength and patience. But they also remind us of the importance of compassion, understanding, and sacrifice—both from the person enduring the hardship and from those offering support.
